This is the part of the knitting process that I love the most - the beginning. The first few stitches of a new colourway where the colour begins to unfold and express itself. This is what I live for a dyer! I can envision all the colourways in the world on a skein of yarn but it's the actual knitting of the yarn that brings me closer to nirvana. Watching the colours unfold with each stitch is inspiring. Sometimes I'm really quite surprised by how the colours come out and other times, like this one, I have managed to achieve what I envisioned. A lot of my brainstorming as a dyer is coming up with colourways that create a knitted piece that expresses the colours in a way I had envisioned. When I've achieved what I set out to do, it's definitely a good day! Today is one of those days - the colours are knitting up as I had planned. Yes! I dye yarn so I can enjoy the colour play.
This colourway is so new I haven't even named it but I wanted to share some of the development process I go through when thinking up new dye techniques. I test dye and test knit so everyone can enjoy the colourways as I had envisioned. It's the most interesting part of my job and I love every part of it! As the years have gone by, I have been able to get better and better at achieving what I want but even now, I still have colourways come out that surprise me but not today, today is a day of colour play I had envisioned.
